Cleft lip


            This is a congenital malformation that resulted to a physical alteration in the skin, mucosa and muscle of the lip with secondary deformation on the anatomy the lower third of the nose, the intrauterine insult happens during the period of upper lip development that results from a partial to a full thickness cleft defect in the upper lip. The deformity will depend on extent of disturbance/disruption on the developing lip; the deformity may involve the area surrounding the lip such as nasal tip, alar lobule, collumela and maxillary area. Cleft lip surgery restores the lip anatomy of individuals with in-born deformities as normal as possible. This could be done either as out patient or in hospital, under local or general anesthesia depending on the age of the patient. We usually require medical clearance for patients in the pediatric age group. There could be some lip swelling at the immediate  post-op period that usually subsides after several weeks to months. Sutures are removed on the 4th or 7th day after the procedure.
